Afternoon tea is an English tradition, rooted in the country for many centuries. The popular repast has origins in the early 19th century, whenAnna, the Duchess of Bedford, found herself feeling peckish during the afternoon. To stave off hunger pangs, she developed the habit of ordering light snacks and a pot of tea to her private quarters mid-afternoon – and shared the experience with companions.
A formal afternoon tea became more widely accepted throughout the Victorian period. It was served with fancies – elaborately decorated cakes tucked into two tiers of stands (that’s how we got the name “high tea”!) – on delicate china with silver teaspoons and linen serviettes. Afternoon tea was set in the late afternoon to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner, when dinnertime was traditionally late in the evening.
Today, afternoo tea is still very popular in the UK! It's served in hotels across the country and often accompanied with freshly baked scones, jam and clap tops, as well as finger sandwiches. Whilst the tradition has been updated to a more simple affair for the everyday lucky enough to enjoy it, Victorian values still remain and infuse the ritual.
Whether of nobility, or working classes, items such as crisp linen, fine china and griance were key. Today, many UK cafes and restaurants strive to create an indulgent experience and emulate these values in the most pleasing manner. Afternoon tea often takes you back in time, to an era of elegance and grandeur, creating a sense of timelessness to truly be savoured.
